  31. LanSync v1.00 Software Distribution 
  32. LanSync allows you to make a distribution image of a program either by
  33. manual specification (of the files and changes needed) or via automatic 
  34. determination. It can update the clients autoexec.bat, config.sys,

  36. files and directories to the client pc. Distribution is via an executable
  37. which can be email to all users that require the Distribution.

  124. CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
  125.  
  126. 1.1 What is LOCKER
  127.  
  128. LOCKER is a program which meters software on a network. It controls the number of users that may run a DOS or WINDOWS executable (*.COM & *.EXE
  129.  
  130. LOCKER is run from a console from which you can:
  131. Add metering to a program,
  132. Change the metering limit on a program,
  133. Remove the metering from a program,
  134. Be notified of any license violation or virus detections
  135. See the active users of a program,
  136. See the number of active users for a program,
  137. See what the peak number of users was for a program,
  138. See the number of times a user had to wait to run a program
  139. See the number of times a user canceled out of waiting for a program to be available.

  143. LOCKER works with most DOS based networks which support DOS file sharing and locking. It has been tested with Novell's Netware, Banyan's Vines,

  147. LOCKER requires DOS 3.3 or higher and Windows 3.1, while it may work with older versions of DOS, we cannot guarantee that it will. LOCKER adds

  150. CHAPTER 2: INSTALLATION
  151.  
  152. 2.0 What you need to remember after installing metering
  153.  
  154. DO NOT erase any hidden files which reside in the applications directory after installing metering. Locker uses these files and if they are rem
  155.  
  156. DO NOT erase the LOCKCON files before removing metering on all metered applications. The applications will still be metered after LOCKCON is re
  157.  
  158. 2.1 Upgrading
  159.  
  160. You should remove metering from all programs you are currently metering. Then proceed with the normal install except you should copy the LOCKER
  161.  
  162. 2.2 New Installation
  163.  
  164. This installation assumes some knowledge of DOS. If you have problems with the commands, please look them up in your DOS manual.
  165.  
  166. First copy the LOCKER disk to a drive\directory where only the SUPERVISOR or NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR has access. For example:
  167.   Copy A:*.* F:\SYSTEM\*.*
  168.  
  169.  
  170. Now startup windows
  171.  
  172. Open up the group you wish to add the LOCKER management console to (LOCKCON) and then select File/New the Program Manager window. Then press OK
  173.

  190. CHAPTER 3. USING LOCKER
  191.  
  192. 3.1 Screen Layout and commands
  193.  
  194. To run LOCKCON double click on its icon. This will bring up Locker's console:
  195.  
  196.  
  197. For each program being metered you will see the following information:
  198.  
  199. PROGRAM:     Either the program executable file name or the             description
  200.  
  201. TYPE:        Whether a program is a DOS or WINDOWS                 (DOS/WIN) based
  202.  
  203. LIMIT:    How many users can use the program concurrently
  204.  
  205. CURRENT:     How many users are currently using the program
  206.  
  207. OVER:    How many times the license was violated
  208.  
  209. PEAK USED: Peak number of concurrent users 
  210.  
  211. WAITS:     Number of users who had to wait to access the program
  212.  
  213. CANCELS:     Number of users who canceled out of waiting for             the program to be     available
  214.  
  215. TOTAL ACCESS: Number of times the program has been run
  216.  
  217. From LOCKCON  you can  either install metering on software, change the metering limits or remove metering from software.
  218.  
  219.  
  220. Actions you can do from this screen:
  221.  
  222. To install metering on a software product press Install Metering Button
  223.  
  224. To highlight a displayed software product use the arrow keys or single click on the item
  225.  
  226. To change the metering limit, first highlight the software name and then press the Edit Metering Button or double click on the item
  227.  
  228. To remove metering from a software product, first highlight the software name and then press the Remove Item Button
  229.  
  230. To add a Office Suite / Group push the Install Suite Button
  231.  
  232. To see the current users for a program, press the Users Button
  233. (The DOS Environment variable  you are using to get the ID from 
  234. must first be specified in File/SetConfig
  235.  
  236. To edit the metering limit of a suite or add/remove items in it, double click on the suite or highlight and press the Edit Metering Button
  237.  
  238. To clear the log information select Edit/Clear Log from the menu
  239.  
  240. To Clear all the logs select Edit/Clear all Logs from the menu
  241.  
  242. To print a report of the metered items select File/Print Log Info from the menu
  243.  
  244. To export the information in Locker to a comma delimited file select File/Export Log Info from the menu
  245.  
  246. To print  the audit log for a program, first highlight the program and then select File/Print Usage Report
  247.  
  248. To display the audit log for a program, first highlight the program and then select File/Display Usage Report
  249.  
  250. To print a statistical/graphical report for a program, first highlight the program and then select File/Print License Report
  251.  
  252. To display a statistical/graphical report for a program, first highlight and then select File/Display License Report

  254. To set the DOS environment variable from which the UserID is gotten select File/SetConfig
  255.  
  256. To  force the screen to update the log information select Edit/Update (or F3)
  257.  
  258. To toggle whether the screen is updated, select Edit/Update Toggle (or F2)

  260. To exit from LOCKCON select File/Exit from the menu
  261.  
  262. 3.2 Install metering on software
  263.  
  264. After pressing the Install Metering Button an entry screen will be displayed:
  265.  
  266.  
  267. Program : This is the software executable name (for example:     TEST.EXE - do not include that program path).
  268.  
  269. Program Desc: This is a description of the item being metered
  270.  
  271. Program Path:    Enter either the directory or the drive:\directory of     where the software is located. Please note that you should     have the same 
  272.  
  273. Module name:     Leave it blank unless the main program     actually starts another module/program and then     terminates. (Only used for windows progr
  274.  
  275. Type:    What type of program you are metering. Normally either     Windows or DOS  program).
  276.  
  277. Limit:    The maximum number of concurrent users             allowed.
  278.  
  279. Scan Time:    Enter how often you want the program to check to     see if a license is available. 
  280.  
  281. Timeout: How long can a user wait for a program to be     available. 0 = No waiting allowed, Blank = Unlimited     waiting. 
  282.  
  283. Log:    This field controls whether the extended log information     is kept.
  284.  
  285. Virus Detection: This field controls whether Locker will check     to see if a virus has infected the exe (only will find     viruses after  which in
  286.  
  287. Allow Violations: Allow Violations to occurs but keep track of     the total number of violations

  289. After you are finished entering the information, you can either escape from adding metering by press CANCEL or install metering by press SAVE.

  291. 3.3 Changing metering limits on software
  292.  
  293. After highlighting the software you wish to change the metering on and pressing Edit Metering Button the same screen as when you installed the 
  294.  
  295. 3.4 Removing metering from software

  299. 3.5  Office Suites / Groups

  301. Before you can meter any programs in a Office Suite you must first install the basic suite information. This is done by pressing the Install Su

  331. 3.6 Metering applications on Local hard drives

  333. There are two way of metering applications residing on local hard drives

  335. 1) You can either install the application on the network,  install metering, and then copy all the files to the each local hard drive (Make cer

  337. 2) Install the application on the local drive, copy the executable file to its own directory on the network, install metering on the executable
  338.  
  339. After changing the metering limits for applications residing on local drives you DO NOT have to redistribute the network files.

  343. Chapter 4: ERROR MESSAGES

  345. 4.1  Common Mistakes & Problems

  347. Most of the problems will be covered by the messages below. Since LOCKER does run on a wide variety of networks, you might get a problem which 
  348.  
  349. If you are using Norton's Desktop for Windows you will need to make the <filename>.@@@  file unhidden.

  385. ERROR-007    : An error occurred while copying the LOCKER.LOG file to the extended log file in the log file directory

  387. ERROR-008    : Locker was unable to create the metering control file in the log file directory

  389. ERROR-009    : Locker was unable to open the LOCKER.MET file in the Locker Directory

  391. ERROR-010    : An error occurred while copying the LOCKER.MET file

  393. ERROR-013    : Locker was unable to create in the log file directory the metering information for the program

  404. ERROR-15    :  It looks like the metering for this program is no longer valid. Check to see if you have a file in the programs directory with the

  406. ERROR-16    : Locker was unable to delete the metered program to restore it with the unmetered version

  408. ERROR-17    : Locker was unable to rename the unmetered version back to the original name
